How to Protect Your Braces and Teeth During Treatment

Posted .

If you are looking to achieve a healthy and beautiful smile, orthodontic treatment may be the right course for you. To achieve the best possible results, it’s important to show your braces proper care and keep them in good shape. We invite you to use the following tips on avoiding damaging foods and maintaining excellent oral hygiene:

– While the pieces that make up your braces are designed for durability, they can be broken and bent by sticky, hard, crunchy or chewy foods. We encourage you to avoid caramel, nuts popcorn, bubblegum and ice in order to preserve your braces.

– Instead, choose softer foods, especially ingredients that are easy to remove during brushing and flossing to prevent your teeth from developing tooth decay due to lingering food particles.

– Because your teeth are covered by braces, they can be more susceptible to the effects of sugar and you should take extra care to maintain daily dental habits. By brushing and flossing every day, you can prevent plaque buildup on the gum line and where the teeth and brackets meet.

– You may need to receive a sports mouth guard if you are involved in a sport to prevent a hard blow or fall from breaking your orthodontic appliance or causing cuts in your mouth.
