Tips for Keeping Tooth Decay at Bay When You Have Braces

Posted .

Do you want a successful and convenient orthodontic journey? If so, you should do your best to keep your smile healthy and strong, which means you should work to avoid dental issues like cavities on a regular basis. Sadly, those with braces are prone to tooth decay because thoroughly cleaning the teeth and gums when you have braces can be difficult. So, our orthodontist, Dr. Ben Frandsen, would like to help you prevent tooth decay by recommending that you do the following things:

-Focus on brushing: Scrub your smile with a soft-bristled toothbrush for two minutes each time. It’s strongly recommended to brush at least twice a day, but if you can brush after each meal and snack, do it. Make sure to tilt the brush as you scrub so you can clean under the braces wires and around the braces brackets.

-Focus on flossing: Floss your teeth at least once a day, if not more. In fact, it’s best to floss after each time you brush. As you do so, use waxed floss and a floss threader to make the job easier. Flossing can help remove cavity-causing bacteria from between the teeth.

-Visit your dentist: Your six-month checkups are very important when preventing cavities. The cleaning treatment provided removes the plaque and bacteria that promote cavities, and the fluoride treatment strengthens your tooth enamel. So, make sure you attend your checkups every six months.
